The Ugly Truth About Longevity And Conventional Medicine

Historically, longevity has been defined by something called Vital Statistics, which is run by the CDC every year in the United States. It takes into account things like death rate, infant mortality and life expectancy. Modern medicine has increased life expectancy to about 78.6 years. However, the situation has changed. The most recent report by the CDC shows that the deadliest and most common killers of Americans include heart disease, cancer, accidents, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, pneumonia, kidney disease, and suicide.

aged man holding an hourglassWhen we look at longevity, it’s a mathematical process where we look at infant mortality and life expectancy over time. Modern conventional medicine has done a fantastic job on improving infant mortality and decreasing infections. These used to be the number one killers, but through improved infant care, better maternal care, the development of antibiotics and vaccines, we were able to improve mortality rates. But, again, the conditions have changed. Diseases and the afflicted are not reducing in numbers, they’re only changing in type.

So it’s no longer infant mortality and infection that is skewing longevity and the length of life, but the chronic diseases that now affect us all that are the major cause of death.

Modern Medicine vs. Longevity

modern doctor pressing a high tech glass computer interfaceModern medicine is mostly about control and palliation. It is a reactive type of medicine, not focused on being proactive and preventative. And that’s the ugly truth – that it’s a reactive approach to health. They wait for the disease to come about and then they react to it. It’s not focused on being proactive and preventative. In the case of most other medical care, it’s mainly about control, slowing the advance, reducing distress, minimizing disability, and prolonging death, which are all noble causes, but it’s different than promoting quality of life and improving longevity in beneficial ways.

Longevity is more about the quality and prevention of chronic disease.

It’s health promotion, education activities with clean water, nutritious food, clean and disaster-free habitation, proper sanitation, control of pollution, poverty alleviation, empowerment of the deprived and disadvantaged, and lifestyle modifications. It includes a change in world view or a paradigm shift for most physicians. Wellbeing implies the presence of positive emotions and the absence of negative emotions, mature character traits, including self-directedness, cooperating with others, self-transcendence, self-satisfaction, and quality of life. Character strengths and virtues, such as hope, compassion, and courage, are all now measurable by scales.

1. Beans and legumes

A study done in 2012 showed they helped to lower blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and triglycerides in people with diabetes when eaten at least two to three times a week. Earlier studies in the early 2000s showed that the single most important food that diabetics can begin to incorporate into their diet to help stabilize blood sugar is, in fact, beans and legumes.

2. Seafood

3. Nuts and seeds

A study done in Canada in 2014 looked at data from 12 clinical trials and showed that eating just two servings of nuts and seeds a day lowered and stabilized blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. It helped with cholesterol levels and reduced risk factors for something called metabolic syndrome.

4. Berries

Researchers at Harvard School of Public Health found that for every three servings of blueberries eaten per week, people can reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes by as much as 26%.

 

5. Dark leafy greens

dark leafy greens in a colanderThis includes kale, spinach, collard greens, and mustard greens. According to a review published in the British Medical Journal, eating one and a half cups of dark leafy greens each day can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 14%.

 

 

6. Yogurt

yogurt in a white bowlThe sixth diabetes superfood is yogurt. Greek yogurt is recommended as it’s a little higher in protein and a little less in carbohydrate content than normal yogurt. It is also really high in calcium, magnesium, protein, and those all-important probiotics which can help with mental health, gut health, cardiovascular health, and, certainly, help lower your blood pressure.

7. Avocado

In 2013, a study showed that avocados can help lower cholesterol, promote normal blood sugar, and reduce inflammation. People with diabetes have a real problem with inflammation, and insulin is a pro-inflammatory hormone which increases risk factors for a number of eye conditions, kidney conditions, and circulatory conditions. So, anything we can do to help reduce inflammation is beneficial.

These are the seven superfoods for diabetes. What you can do tonight is have a plateful of beans, legumes, lentils, and dark leafy greens. You should start eating these foods as often as you can (daily is best!).

5 Foods You Should NEVER Eat (They Make You Look Older!)

We all know that the foods we eat affect us on the inside, as well as the outside. But did you know that there are certain foods that will make you feel and look older? There are five foods groups that have various mechanisms that actually change how you age. We’ll be giving you a little insight to each of them here.

5 Foods You Should NEVER Eat

1. Refined grains

different type of breads made with refined grain in a basketRefined grains include anything made from white flour: baked goods, pastries, breads etc. These refined grains can spike insulin levels, which is a pro-inflammatory hormone that can cause devastation to both how you look and what’s going on inside of your body. So, avoid refined grains as much as possible.

 

 

2. Fried or charred foods

plate of french fries with ketchup and mayonnaise on the sideFried or charred foods are responsible for something called AGE, or advanced glycosylated end products, which are responsible for binding up tissues and cells that make things internally stiffer and causes aging. Avoid anything fried or charred at any cost.

 

 

3. Sodas and juices

three different bottles of soda packed in iceSodas and juices are basically just sugar that spikes insulin levels, changes growth hormone levels and cortisol levels, and hormonally make you age at a much more rapid pace. Sodas and juices should be avoided wherever possible. They can be easily replaced with water or natural teas.

 

 

4. Anything in a box or bag

Imagine yourself walking through a market or a grocery store, going through the middle aisles, and seeing all of those boxes and bags. They’re full of ingredients that if you read them, you cannot (oftentimes) pronounce them. Those ingredients are associated with aging. They’re also typically very high in trans fats and partially hydrogenated oils. Trans fats and partially hydrogenated oils are preservatives to keep these foods on the shelves, but they age you. The body cannot process them in way that is healthful, so you should try to shop on the periphery of the grocery stores. Get fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meats, cheeses, and avoid things in boxes and bags.

5. Seafood

different types of seafood such as fish, mussels, shrimp, and salmon on a white surfaceNumber five comes with a caveat. It’s seafood. You have to be very mindful about how you choose your seafood. Wild Alaskan salmon is wonderfully effective to slow down the aging process, but if you choose certain seafoods that are laden and loaded with high mercury, cadmium, and arsenic levels, then you change the metabolism of your cells and mitochondria which affects how you age. Watch out for seafood that is high in mercury and other heavy metals, and be especially cautious about shrimp and salmon. Avoid bigger fish like swordfish, shark, and king mackerel. Because these fish are in the higher echelon of the ocean food chain, this means that they ingest all the heavy metals that the smaller fish (aka their prey) eat.

These are the five food groups that you should avoid, or consume with caution. These are the food groups that will affect how you age, and make you look and feel older.

Try This Easy Home Made face-peel To Reverse Aging (TEAR AWAY WRINKLES!)

Alpha Hydroxy Acids Facial Peel

  • ¼ cup of fine cane sugar
  • ¼ cup of plain yogurt
  • 1 egg white mixed with 2 tsp of water
  • ¼ cup fine cane sugar

Whisk all the ingredients in bowl. It should become a slightly granulated paste. Apply this to your face, neck, and forehead. Try not to get too close to the eyes as it can be irritating. Wait 10-15 minutes for the peel to work on your skin. You can choose to scrub your skin and exfoliate. Then, use cotton balls or a washcloth to gently wipe the mixture off your face, or wash it off with cool water.

Beta Hydroxy Acids Facial Peel

woman lying on a spa bed having a facial peel applied Beta hydroxy acid peels should be used every day after you’ve done your alpha peels. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 tbsp baking soda
  • ¼ cup of water
  • 10 uncoated aspirin (crushed)
  • 4-5 drops fresh lemon juice

Dissolve the baking soda with water. Crush up the aspirin and add it to the baking soda mixture. Add the lemon juice to activate the baking soda and aspirin. The mixture should be a fine paste. Apply it all over your face, forehead, cheeks, neck, and around the eyes (be careful not to get too close). Allow it to set for 10-15 minutes. Then, use a cotton ball or just cool water to wash it off.

Facial Peel for Sensitive Skin

All you need are two ingredients: green tea, and cucumber. Make a cup of green tea and let it cool to room temperature. Peel half a cucumber, and put it in a blender along with the cooled tea. Blend it up and apply it to your skin. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes before removing.

 

 

These facial peels are effective and extremely cheap compared to some other products that are on the market. Make sure that you moisturize your face after the alpha and beta facial peels as they are exfoliating.

3 Key Nutrients That Help Your Body Burn Fat

Since the 1940s, the majority of strategies and products out there are focused around appetite suppressant and appetite control. Whilst it’s important to control your cravings and appetite as part of a weight loss program, there are other strategies to help you burn fat internally. This means not just restricting the calories you eat, but also helping your body burn current fat stores.

There are three key nutrients that will help your body do this, and we’ll be looking at them more closely here.

 

3 Key Nutrients That Burn Fat

1. Chromium

It’s actually also known as glucose tolerance factor. When it comes to weight loss, blood sugar is the root culprit and insulin is the target hormone that tells your body to store calories. So, if we can get better control of glucose and insulin, then weight loss will happen much more easily.

Chromium actually binds to amino acids and helps your body absorb them. Chromium has been found in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes to help people lose weight. It decreases fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1C, and insulin resistance. So on top of controlling your appetite and cravings, you can also change your body’s metabolism so that you’re not storing fat but burning fat instead.

2. Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) molecular diagramThe second nutrient is ALA. It’s found in meat, spinach, cruciferous vegetables, carrots, beets, and root vegetables. Alpha lipoic acid helps to moderate glucose and insulin levels in your body. It has also been shown to help with neuropathy in individuals with high blood sugar. It improves insulin sensitivity which affects how your body responds to the calories. It encourages your body to burn fat instead of storing it.

 

3. Milk thistle

Milk thistle has been shown, in multiple studies, to improve blood sugar and insulin sensitivity. There is a component of milk thistle called silymarin. One study has shown that intaking milk thistle for just 45 days decreases blood glucose by 11%, and insulin by 14%. Improving blood glucose and insulin is important in helping your body burn fat. Milk thistle has the added benefit that it protects the liver and improves liver function for blood glucose.

The Truth About Intermittent Fasting For Quick Weight Loss

There is a lot of information about weight loss on the internet. How do we lose weight? What’s the secret to losing weight fast? We’ll explore the truth about intermittent fasting for weight loss, and focus on the difference between intermittent fasting and chronic caloric restriction.

Quick History of Intermittent Fasting

Since the earliest antiquity, we have learned from historians and archaeologists that intermittent fasting has been a part of human civilization for millennia.

First, it was based on evolution. Our ancestors only ate when they were hungry and when they could find food. So, when they got hungry, they found food, ate, got hungry, found food again, and ate again. That was one of the earliest forms of intermittent fasting in humans. Eventually, civilization occurred and things changed. We grew our own crops and reared our own livestock so food became more readily available. We didn’t need to fast anymore as we had access to food.

Intermittent Fasting vs. Chronic Caloric Restriction

Chronic caloric restriction is an effective weight loss method that requires you to reduce calories every day, seven days a week, four weeks a month, 12 months a year. Most people aren’t satisfied with that, as they have to eat less food all the time. We all know about fad diets, but science and history tells us that intermittent fasting can be as powerful, and maybe even more powerful than chronic caloric restriction.

 

How Intermittent Fasting Helps Weight Loss

Interesting studies have shown that intermittent fasting can change how macrophages (immune cells) act around adipocytes (fat cells). It can actually change how fat cells release fat in a very different way than chronic caloric restriction. Studies have shown that intermittent fasting changes microbiota, or the good bacteria that grows in our gut. Microbiota is important for weight loss, brain health, immune health, and other processes that help you be stronger and live longer. Intermittent fasting can improve insulin levels, blood pressure, blood sugar, sleep patterns, cholesterol, and triglycerides. Eight human trials have shown that intermittent fasting can be as effective, if not more effective than chronic caloric restriction.

This is typically done in cycles of what’s called “five-and-two”:

  • For five days, eat normally and healthfully. An example would be to follow a Paleo diet which is high in protein and low in carbs and sugars.
  • Then, for the next two days, eat less and restrict your calories to 300, 400, or 500 calories.
  • Repeat for five to seven cycles.

After five to seven cycles (which may take a month or two) of five-and-two, you will lose weight. By eating healthy food, good fats, and good proteins, you’ll lose weight and help your blood sugar and blood pressure levels.

There are certainly fad diets out there that can help you lose weight. But, if you do the five-and-two, and those two days consist of a 75% reduction in your calorie intake, it is potentially more powerful and gives you better benefits than other diets out there.
