How I Treat My Own Family

Doctor Treating His Own Family

Someone recently asked me, “Dr. Ryan, you’re so knowledgeable about health, wellness, and medicine. What do you do to treat your own family when they get sick?” The short answer is that I don’t. When anyone in my family gets sick, they go to the doctor just like everyone else. The long answer is that I do try to educate and inspire them, and because of that, my family is extraordinarily healthy.

Doctor Treating His Own Family

If you’ve read some of my other posts here on the blog, you may already know I have two small boys. I try to teach them that life is made up of your thoughts and internal images expressed to the extent you believe them. I also teach them to focus on positive thoughts and feelings. I know this sounds overly simplified, and that’s because it is.

As adults, we tend to complicate things, doubt our dreams, and fail to believe in ourselves. Sometimes we’re unclear about what we want and we’re inconsistent in how we go about achieving it. All of this slows us down or stops us from the health, wellness, and happiness we really want. The answer is always within ourselves, our genetics, and the decisions we make to move towards good health.

basket of tropical fruit including pineapple, mango, and papaya

My boys were originally raised in Hawaii so they were always exposed to delicious tropical fruits, vegetables, fish, and other seafood. They’ve learned to eat whatever mom and dad eat, so their palates are extraordinary. They’ll happily eat fresh produce, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, and proteins. Maybe it’s because my wife and I are lucky, but maybe it’s because we inspire them to make good choices about how to take care of themselves. When it comes to snacks, my boys enjoy all kinds of healthy options. They’ll eat fruit salad, hummus and carrot sticks, apple slices with nut butters, and even nuts, seeds, and edamame.

Even though the boys consume a healthy diet, they still take three daily supplements. One is an omega fatty acid because research has shown that developing brains require essential fatty acids. They also take a multivitamin-mineral because some of the most common deficiencies in growing children are minerals like iron, magnesium, and zinc. The third supplement they take is probiotics because it’s important to influence healthy gut bacteria in children.

herbal tincture for a healthy immune system

I’m blessed because both of my kids understand the importance of education and inspiration. When they get sick, they visit a doctor like anyone else. At the first signs of sniffles or stomach troubles, I may give them a herbal glyceride tincture to help boost their immune systems. The kids take great care of themselves though but eating a healthy diet and constantly playing to stay physically active. As young kids, they may not yet understand mindfulness and connectedness, but it is something we are starting to teach them because it creates happiness in life.

If you have kids in your family, I know it can sometimes be a struggle in terms of education and inspiration. There’s a lot to be mindful of including boosting their immune systems, expanding their palates, and making sure they’re constantly playing to avoid being sedentary. You can use the information here on the Zenith Labs website to learn how to create health and wellness in your life and the lives of your family members.

The Single Best Way To Reverse A Fatty Liver, Period

The Single Best Way To Reverse A Fatty Liver, Period

Let’s talk about a silent killer that affects millions of people in the world — non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or fatty liver disease. Find out the number one tip on how to stop it, if not reverse it.

About your liver

doctor in lab coat with a graphic of a human liver floating above his palmThe brain might be the “General” of our bodies, but the liver is certainly the “Captain”. It has so much importance to your health. On average, an adult liver is approximately 3.5 pounds and has over 500 functions in the body. It affects your immune system, digestive system, and detoxes everything that comes into the body either through the mouth, skin, or nose. It also affects your brain directly.

An incredible thing about your liver is that it is regenerative. You can take 90% of your liver out and over time, it can regenerate.

What is fatty liver disease?

human liver next to a vial of blood and a notepad page with alcohol and molecular structure of ethanol written in markerThere can be many causes of liver disease, such as viruses or alcohol use. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is characterized by fatty infiltration of hepatocytes (or liver cells) in a person who consumes less than 25-30 grams of alcohol per day. It is a process where healthy liver cells are replaced with fat due to inflammation and bad habits. The danger with fatty liver disease in a moderate drinker or a non-drinker is that it’s mostly silent. Symptoms only appear in the later stages. You may notice bloating, the whites of the eyes becoming yellowish, or itching in your palms and feet.

graphic of an obese man with fatty liver and a zoomed in image of fatty liver cellsIt’s estimated that about 25% of patients have fatty liver disease, and they don’t even know it. If you’re overweight, your risk shoots up to 75%. You’re may be thinking, “Oh, I’m slightly overweight. I have a little pot belly, but everything is fine.” The problem is that fatty liver disease turns fibrotic and cirrhotic over time. It can progress to liver failure and kill you. The scary thing is most people don’t even know that it’s going on in their bodies. There are known risk factors of fat liver disease: obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, and many medications. Common (purportedly safe) medications can cause this kind of fatty liver damage.

Fatty liver disease cannot be solved with medication

different omega 3 fatty acid food sources laid out on a round wooden baseThere’s no medication to solve fatty liver. It’s all down to lifestyle. It’s about changing your lifestyle choices and habits so that your liver can repair itself over time. Things like weight loss, avoiding food allergies, avoiding refined grans, trans fatty acids, brominated vegetable oil, can be helpful and protective against fatty liver. We also know that adding things like Vitamin E, Vitamin C, L-carnitine, MIC, lipotropics, betaine, magnesium, zinc, lysine, taurine, omega-3 fatty acids, bitter vegetables, and cruciferous vegetables can help protect you against this disease.

The liver is the only organ that can regenerate in the capacity that it can. But it takes a long time, and you’ll have to be patient. You have to moderate your life so that the liver can regenerate. It takes months, if not years, depending on the advanced state of fatty liver disease.

Top tip to stop and reverse fatty liver disease

the word "avoid" spelt out in sugar scattered on a blue tableThe research shows that the sugars, sucrose, and fructose, can aggressively advance fatty liver disease. So, avoid sucrose and fructose as much as you can. One study showed that individuals that eat more sucrose and fructose had a 115% higher rate of developing fatty liver disease. Avoid fast foods because they are laden with sucrose and fructose, and always read food labels.

a father, mother, and child preparing a fresh salad in the kitchenRemember the documentary “Super Size Me” by Morgan Spurlock? He basically ate nothing but fast food for 30 days. That contains enormous amounts of sucrose and fructose. He had higher liver enzymes, ALT, AST, and his fatty liver disease progressed substantially. Multiple studies have shown that if you reduce your intake of sucrose and fructose, your liver has a better ability to repair itself. This is assuming that you’re doing your best with avoiding medications, abstaining from alcohol, and implementing positive lifestyle strategies. But the number one tip is try to limit sucrose and fructose. Cook at home more and enjoy meals with your family because you will have substantially lower levels of sucrose and fructose.

5 Foods You Should NEVER Eat (They Make You Look Older!)

5 Foods You Should NEVER Eat (They Make You Look Older!)

We all know that the foods we eat affect us on the inside, as well as the outside. But did you know that there are certain foods that will make you feel and look older? There are five foods groups that have various mechanisms that actually change how you age. We’ll be giving you a little insight to each of them here.

5 Foods You Should NEVER Eat

1. Refined grains

different type of breads made with refined grain in a basketRefined grains include anything made from white flour: baked goods, pastries, breads etc. These refined grains can spike insulin levels, which is a pro-inflammatory hormone that can cause devastation to both how you look and what’s going on inside of your body. So, avoid refined grains as much as possible.

2. Fried or charred foods

plate of french fries with ketchup and mayonnaise on the sideFried or charred foods are responsible for something called AGE, or advanced glycosylated end products, which are responsible for binding up tissues and cells that make things internally stiffer and causes aging. Avoid anything fried or charred at any cost.

3. Sodas and juices

three different bottles of soda packed in iceSodas and juices are basically just sugar that spikes insulin levels, changes growth hormone levels and cortisol levels, and hormonally make you age at a much more rapid pace. Sodas and juices should be avoided wherever possible. They can be easily replaced with water or natural teas.

4. Anything in a box or bag

nutritional content label of food with a close up on trans fat and saturated fat amountsNow, this is a big food group. Imagine yourself walking through a market or a grocery store, going through the middle aisles, and seeing all of those boxes and bags. They’re full of ingredients that if you read them, you cannot (oftentimes) pronounce them. Those ingredients are associated with aging. They’re also typically very high in trans fats and partially hydrogenated oils. Trans fats and partially hydrogenated oils are preservatives to keep these foods on the shelves, but they age you. The body cannot process them in way that is healthful, so you should try to shop on the periphery of the grocery stores. Get fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meats, cheeses, and avoid things in boxes and bags.

5. Seafood

different types of seafood such as fish, mussels, shrimp, and salmon on a white surfaceNumber five comes with a caveat. It’s seafood. You have to be very mindful about how you choose your seafood. Wild Alaskan salmon is wonderfully effective to slow down the aging process, but if you choose certain seafoods that are laden and loaded with high mercury, cadmium, and arsenic levels, then you change the metabolism of your cells and mitochondria which affects how you age. Watch out for seafood that is high in mercury and other heavy metals, and be especially cautious about shrimp and salmon. Avoid bigger fish like swordfish, shark, and king mackerel. Because these fish are in the higher echelon of the ocean food chain, this means that they ingest all the heavy metals that the smaller fish (aka their prey) eat.

These are the five food groups that you should avoid, or consume with caution. These are the food groups that will affect how you age, and make you look and feel older.

3 Forgotten Adaptogens For All Day Energy (WORKS FAST!)

3 Forgotten Adaptogens For All Day Energy (WORKS FAST!)

Feeling lethargic? Are you looking for healthy ways to get an energy boost? We’ll be revealing three forgotten adaptogen herbs that you can use for all-day energy, improved stamina, and improved concentration.

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are natural agents (typically herbs) that people, societies, and civilizations have been using for thousands of years to help with energy levels, stamina, and longevity.

We’ll be listing three adaptogens that aren’t utilized as much here in the United States, but are found in three different locations around the planet.

The 3 Forgotten Adaptogen Herbs

1. Withania (Ashwagandha)

ashwagandha plant growing outdoorsThe first adaptogen herb is Withania, originating from East India. It’s also commonly known as Ashwagandha. It is used to help memory, stress, insomnia, immune function, pain, aging, infertility in both males and females, and anxiety. It seems to work on our neurotransmitters dopamine, dopamine receptors, GABA, GABA receptors, adrenal function, as well as the thyroid.

2. Rhodiola (Siberian Ginseng)

siberian ginseng growing outdoorsThe second herb is Rhodiola from Siberia, also known as Siberian Ginseng. This also seems to work on dopamine and dopamine receptors in the brain, and helps with serotonin levels as well. Studies have shown that it helps energy, stamina, strength, mental capacity, athletic performance, and athletic recovery after a workout. It’s an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and has also been studied in diabetes.

3. Chisandra

schisandra plant outdoorsThe third herb is Chisandra from China. Chisandra helps reduce stress, increase energy, and improve endurance. It helps with liver function, hepatitis, PMS, anxiety, and blood pressure concentration. It has also been shown to have anti-viral activity.

The #1 Master Tip to Help with Weight Loss

The #1 Master Tip to Help with Weight Loss

Want to know the number one tip to help with weight loss? It’s actually really quite simple – eat breakfast.

Master Tip to Help with Weight Loss

fried egg in an iron pan on a wooden table with broken egg shells and pieces of bread next to it

Multiple studies across the world have shown that eating breakfast, particularly a breakfast high in protein and fat that provides calories in the morning hours, can help with substantial long-term weight loss. Conversely, people who skip breakfast have been shown to be more likely to gain weight over time. And the reason for this is quite simple: If you skip breakfast, you’re more likely to eat more later in the day. You’re also more likely to have a larger dinner, which is directly associated with weight gain.

Eating calories at breakfast might seem counter-intuitive to weight loss, but studies have shown this to be effective. When you eat breakfast, it affects the hormones ghrelin and adiponectin that help you lose weight.

woman wearing a pair of oversized jeans and holding the waistband to show size

So, the number one master tip to help with weight loss is: Don’t skip breakfast. Eat breakfast every morning, and in fact, let breakfast be the largest meal of your day. You can have light lunches, and then make dinner your smallest meal of the day.

eggs

Is Eating Eggs Healthy? (DOCTOR RESPONDS!)

Here’s a pretty common question that keeps coming up: Is eating eggs healthy for you? This conversation came up in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, when doctors and researchers showed that cholesterol had a link to cardiovascular disease, stroke, heart attack, diabetes. But new research has shown that dietary cholesterol intake has very little to do with your risk factors for those chronic diseases.

Cholesterol and chronic diseases

doctor holding up sign that says "chronic diseases"The body produces cholesterol, but it is not the underlying culprit for all of these chronic issues. Inflammation is the real culprit, causing damage to blood vessels. The body uses cholesterol as a “paste” of sorts to try to protect itself from further damage.

There was a lot of interest in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s about dietary cholesterol intake, and, of course, eggs have a considerable amount of cholesterol, specifically in the yolks. But research in the last decade has clearly shown that the intake of eggs has virtually no increased risk factors for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, and Alzheimer’s.

Are eggs healthy?

white and brown eggs laid out on a white tableWe know that eggs are a complete protein. They’re high in choline and lutein, both of which are great for eye health, nerve transmission, and cell signalling. One study showed that the intake of eggs on a daily basis had no effect on plasma cholesterol or blood cholesterol. Another study has shown that the daily intake of eggs has no effect on increasing risk factors for cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. Another study in Korea showed that the daily intake of eggs actually decreased the risk of metabolic syndrome.

good HDL cholesterol to bad LDL cholesterol One study done on a Mediterranean cohort showed that there were no changes in blood cholesterol or triglycerides. Another study has shown that the daily consumption of eggs actually improves the good HDL cholesterol to bad LDL cholesterol ratios.

Another cool study has shown that eating the whole egg, both the yolk and egg white, actually improves your body’s potential to increase muscle protein.

So, avoiding the yolks, which is higher in cholesterol, may diminish that effect.

woman standing next to oversized egg with nutrition facts on itWe know that certain proteins (like red meat) increase the risk factors of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, but studies have shown that eggs do not. They are a complete protein, and high in nutrients like choline and lutein.

Whilst eggs are healthy to eat, you should still try to limit it to one egg per day, seven per week.

human hand with a stop sign on it above text "high cholesterol"If you suffer from high cholesterol, you may want to talk to a physician about limiting egg consumption a little more. But the research shows that consuming approximately one egg per day has no negative effect on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or Alzheimer’s.

egg omelette with fresh parsley and side salad on a red checkered tablecloth

Of course, it also depends on how you cook them. Boiling is a simple healthy way to cook and eat eggs. It doesn’t have all of the added fat when you fry an egg. Scrambled eggs are great too because you can include vegetables in the mix that have antioxidant effects. Just remember — eggs are healthy. Don’t be scared of them!

7 Diabetes Superfoods You Need To Eat Daily (WORKS FAST!)

7 Diabetes Superfoods You Need To Eat Daily (WORKS FAST!)

Here are seven diabetes superfoods that you need to eat daily, and the best thing is – they work fast! If you start to make these seven superfoods part of your daily routine, you can see rapid changes in your blood glucose level and stabilization of haemoglobin A1c.

Cure Diabetes Fast Superfoods

1. Beans and legumes

different beans and legumes on a white surfaceThe number one superfood is beans and legumes. They are terrific sources of fiber, protein, magnesium, and calcium. A study done in 2012 showed they helped to lower blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and triglycerides in people with diabetes when eaten at least two to three times a week. Earlier studies in the early 2000s showed that the single most important food that diabetics can begin to incorporate into their diet to help stabilize blood sugar is, in fact, beans and legumes.

2. Seafood

various seafood such as fish, crabs, shrimp, scallops, octopus on a white surfaceSuperfood number two: fish and seafood, especially cold-water fish, salmon, mackerel, and shellfish. Look for low mercury sources of fish and seafood. Trout is a terrific source of omega-3s and minerals. A British study showed that it has helped lower risk factors for cardiovascular disease and kidney disease in individuals with diabetes.

3. Nuts and seeds

a pile of nuts and seeds on a white surfaceNuts and seeds are rich in fiber and protein. A study done in Canada in 2014 looked at data from 12 clinical trials and showed that eating just two servings of nuts and seeds a day lowered and stabilized blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. It helped with cholesterol levels and reduced risk factors for something called metabolic syndrome.

4. Berries

different berries such as blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and strawberries on a white surfaceAny dark berries such as blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries make up this group of superfood. Researchers at Harvard School of Public Health found that for every three servings of blueberries eaten per week, people can reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes by as much as 26%.

5. Dark leafy greens

dark leafy greens in a colanderThis includes kale, spinach, collard greens, and mustard greens. According to a review published in the British Medical Journal, eating one and a half cups of dark leafy greens each day can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 14%.

6. Yogurt

yogurt in a white bowlThe sixth diabetes superfood is yogurt. Greek yogurt is recommended as it’s a little higher in protein and a little less in carbohydrate content than normal yogurt. It is also really high in calcium, magnesium, protein, and those all-important probiotics which can help with mental health, gut health, cardiovascular health, and, certainly, help lower your blood pressure.

7. Avocado

a whole avocado and a halved avocado on a white surfaceThe seventh superfood that helps reduce your blood sugar is avocado. Avocado is high in monounsaturated fats, fiber, potassium, and lutein. In 2013, a study showed that avocados can help lower cholesterol, promote normal blood sugar, and reduce inflammation. People with diabetes have a real problem with inflammation, and insulin is a pro-inflammatory hormone which increases risk factors for a number of eye conditions, kidney conditions, and circulatory conditions. So, anything we can do to help reduce inflammation is beneficial.

These are the seven superfoods for diabetes. What you can do tonight is have a plateful of beans, legumes, lentils, and dark leafy greens. You should start eating these foods as often as you can (daily is best!).

The Single Best Way To Fix Erectile Dysfunction in 30 Days, Period

The Single Best Way To Fix Erectile Dysfunction in 30 Days, Period

We are going to reveal the single best way to fix erectile dysfunction in 30 days. And it’s really quite simple! This topic is directed towards men, but women are encouraged to share this with their male counterparts too because, as we know, men can be a little intimidated about medical information and interventions.

Balance your hormones

different pairs of hands holding up colourful letters to spell "Hormones"

The single best way to fix erectile dysfunction is to balance your hormones. You’ll need to balance out several hormones including testosterone, thyroid, DHEA, growth hormone, insulin, and kidney hormones. To help balance insulin and kidney hormones, we need to get your blood sugar and blood pressure under control. We also need to balance out those other hormones, making sure that they’re within normal range for your age group. We can always look at good nutrition, herbal supplements, and L-Arginine, but if your hormones are not in balance, then you can have a more difficult time achieving an erection.

barbarian XL testosterone booster supplement by zenith labsWe’ve developed a masterclass of five pillars of health: nutrition, exercise, mind-body relationship, detox, and hormone balancing. We’ve also developed a supplement called Barbarian XL, which is tremendously effective at providing men with the erections that they desire. When we put all of these five pillars of health together, combined with the supplement, it’s remarkably effective. But we have to make sure that those hormones are in balance first before anything else as that provides the foundation.

man pulling the waistband of his pants outwards with one hand and giving thumbs up with other

Oftentimes, if we don’t have balanced hormone levels, even the most effective medications will not work. But if you apply the five pillars of health with the hormone balancing, you’ll see remarkable results.

The single best way to fix erectile dysfunction in 30 days is to make sure you get those hormones in balance.

The Ugly Truth About Longevity And Conventional Medicine

The Ugly Truth About Longevity And Conventional Medicine

ugly truth in letterpress type on wooden blocksWe’ll be exploring the ugly truth between longevity and modern conventional medicine. Historically, longevity has been defined by something called Vital Statistics, which is run by the CDC every year in the United States. It takes into account things like death rate, infant mortality and life expectancy. Modern medicine has increased life expectancy to about 78.6 years. However, the situation has changed. The most recent report by the CDC shows that the deadliest and most common killers of Americans include heart disease, cancer, accidents, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, pneumonia, kidney disease, and suicide.

aged man holding an hourglassWhen we look at longevity, it’s a mathematical process where we look at infant mortality and life expectancy over time. Modern conventional medicine has done a fantastic job on improving infant mortality and decreasing infections. These used to be the number one killers, but through improved infant care, better maternal care, the development of antibiotics and vaccines, we were able to improve mortality rates. But, again, the conditions have changed. Diseases and the afflicted are not reducing in numbers, they’re only changing in type.

So it’s no longer infant mortality and infection that is skewing longevity and the length of life, but the chronic diseases that now affect us all that are the major cause of death.

Modern Medicine vs. Longevity

modern doctor pressing a high tech glass computer interfaceModern medicine is mostly about control and palliation. It is a reactive type of medicine, not focused on being proactive and preventative. And that’s the ugly truth – that it’s a reactive approach to health. They wait for the disease to come about and then they react to it. It’s not focused on being proactive and preventative. In the case of most other medical care, it’s mainly about control, slowing the advance, reducing distress, minimizing disability, and prolonging death, which are all noble causes, but it’s different than promoting quality of life and improving longevity in beneficial ways.

Longevity is more about the quality and prevention of chronic disease.

old couple jumping in the air at the beachLongevity is bigger than just medicine itself. It’s health promotion, education activities with clean water, nutritious food, clean and disaster-free habitation, proper sanitation, control of pollution, poverty alleviation, empowerment of the deprived and disadvantaged, and lifestyle modifications. It includes a change in world view or a paradigm shift for most physicians. Wellbeing implies the presence of positive emotions and the absence of negative emotions, mature character traits, including self-directedness, cooperating with others, self-transcendence, self-satisfaction, and quality of life. Character strengths and virtues, such as hope, compassion, and courage, are all now measurable by scales.

longevity activator supplement by zenith labsSo this means that conventional medicine needs to have a paradigm shift away from control and palliation to prevention and cure. We’ve developed a masterclass which focuses on longevity, and we use the five pillars of health, diet and nutrition, exercise, balancing hormones, detox, and mind-body relationship. We’ve also developed a supplement called Longevity Activator, which actually helps to transform your genes and the pathway that you take in longevity to provide a better quality of life.

Dr Ryan SheltonSo, again, this involves a paradigm shift looking more on prevention being proactive and looking towards cures.

Dr. Shelton's Favorite Anti Aging Tip (NON NEGOTIABLE!)

Dr. Shelton’s Favorite Anti Aging Tip (NON NEGOTIABLE!)

Who doesn’t want to live longer – and look good doing it? We’re going to reveal our favorite anti-aging tip.

The Blue Zones

flag blue a pin on blue mapThere are cultures and civilizations where a high percentage of people live beyond a hundred years old. Researchers have scoured the globe and looked at different civilizations and places with centenarians (individuals that live over 100 years old). These areas that have a high concentration of centenarians are called Blue Zones. Researchers look at these civilizations so that they can get an idea of common trends on how people in these pockets of the world are able to defy age and live so long.

There are Blue Zones located in Greece, Japan, Sardinia, California, and Costa Rica.

The #1 Anti-Aging Tip

faces of three women agingMost anti-aging tips are no brainers: don’t smoke, eat a good healthy plant-based diet, and exercise. But this number one anti-aging tip may surprise you – social engagement. Continually being involved in your community, being productive and engaged in challenging and interesting work, having relationships, being conscientious and prudent, having intentional choices, and socially involved in helping others could extend your life. Social engagement might be the key to aging. Researchers have found that being socially engaged is really important not only to how you age, but how long you are able to live your life.

Dr Ryan SheltonI’m happy to bring this information to you. Make sure that you give us feedback and additional ideas that you want to hear about. Again, my name is Dr. Shelton and I believe in the original meaning of the word doctor, docere, which means teacher.
