Many people have heard the term “detox,” but few know the specifics of what a detox actually is. So, here’s a simple breakdown of what you need to know…

Each day, our bodies are exposed to a variety of toxins — from the environment around us and the things we consume. When you undergo a detox, you eliminate those toxins from your diet or lifestyle. There are many methods you can use in order to detox, each yielding unique benefits.

For example, you might follow a strict diet that limits certain foods or drink detox drinks daily. Whatever method you choose, the aim will be the same: to get rid of toxins.

You can also detox to help achieve personal goals, such as weight loss and improved health. Of course, before you get started with a detox, it’s important to figure out which one will work best for you.

One of the most popular forms of detoxification is through dietary changes. The historic notion of using food as medicine — as put forward by Hypocrites in 400 BC — could be as true today as when it was first brought to light.[1] Research suggests that following a core food plan can help people to detox their bodies and noticeably improve their overall health.[2]

There are many reasons you may choose to undergo a detox — from weight loss to disease management — and getting the correct information for your needs is essential. Throughout this guide, I’ll take you through some of the most common detoxes, and how you can use them to get the results you’re looking for.

The truth of the matter is, there are many reasons why detoxing could be important to your health. Frankly, there’s a good reason that a massive 92 percent of American licensed naturopathic doctors use this form of treatment.[3] With that in mind, let’s take a look at the latest research.

Could the environment be poisoning your body? Research published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health suggests that environmental issues could be contributing to the development of chronic diseases in people across a range of societies.[4]

These illnesses may include cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, brain-related disorders, and immune dysfunctions.[5] The study authors suggested a detox could be one treatment that would help people to avoid contamination and reduce their risk for illnesses.[6]

One particularly enlightening review looked at a case study in which a woman used a dietary detox to cure herself of an ongoing health problem.[9] The woman’s symptoms included vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, night sweats, and shortness of breath. Next up, let’s deal with the elephant in the room: Can you really detox your body? Or is it all a big myth?

There’s evidence to suggest that our world is becoming more and more toxic thanks to radioactivity, heavy metals, and pesticides.[11] These toxins can have harmful effects on the human body.[12] Is undergoing a detox the answer?

I always recommend speaking with an expert before attempting any form of treatment. It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your health!

Who Shouldn’t Detox?

Of course, detoxes aren’t safe for everyone. Before you jump on the bandwagon and give it a try, you’ll need to consider your greater health.

Let’s take a look at some of the people who should think twice before undergoing a detox program or a body cleanse diet:

  • Pregnant Women

Are you pregnant? A detox likely won’t be your best choice.

When you’re expecting, your dietary habits will impact your unborn child.[61] Mothers-to-be have extra nutritional needs so that they can support and nurture the new life growing inside them.[62]

For that reason, any diet or program that cuts ingredients out — such as a detox — is a real no-no.

  • Breastfeeding or Nursing Women

Similarly, new mothers may want to steer clear of cleanses and detox diets.

If you’re breastfeeding your child, you need to consume extra nutrients to provide your infant with what they need to grow and develop healthily.[63] That means that cutting out ingredients from your diet is a bad move.

  • People Who Are Sick

If you’re suffering from a short or long-term illness you might want to avoid undergoing a detox.

To fight off your condition, your body needs a variety of nutrients and vitamins. Eating a wide-ranging diet will help you get just that.

Quitting smoking is tough! Research suggests that long-term smokers will try (and fail) 30 times before they’re finally quit successfully.[64]

Thus far, detox foot pads haven’t caused any severe health side-effects; however, they have no proven benefits either.

While the novelty of watching them change colors can be entertaining, the products’ ridiculously high prices for what you ultimately get (nothing) are far less amusing.

Starting a detox tea or drink cleanse? Whether this type of cleanse is safe depends on the ingredients in the beverages.
